Private Samuel Harris trained at Fort Bliss, Texas during World War I. He was assigned to Company B, 14th Machine Gun Battalion, and was shipped to France with the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). His unit participated in an American advance against the German lines in September 1918. After assisting in the capture of a town, his unit was ordered to pull back.
